MRUC MUSIC
Music is a vital
part of the Manor Road spiritual community. Our musical efforts are geared
to supporting and enhancing the peoples’ song in worship. We provide several
musical opportunities for congregants, with varying levels of commitment.
- Congregational
Song
Worship
incorporates many opportunities for all congregants to participate in
congregational song, including hymns and responses. Recently, the
congregation has begun participating in the chanting of the Psalms, as
well as in Gathering Music, congregational singing which centres us for
worship.
- Mixed-Voice
Special Choir-Christmas and Palm Sunday
For adult
singers of all voice ranges, the mixed-voice special choirs provide an
opportunity for congregants to participate in a short-term choir
commitment—three rehearsals (two Sundays after worship and one Thursday
evening) and one worship participation (two anthems) twice a year (the
Sunday before Christmas and the Sunday before Easter). A smaller
mixed-voice special choir also sings for worship on Christmas Eve. This
year, a mixed-voice special choir also participated in March Madness, the
church’s annual community talent evening.
- Soprano-Alto
Special Choir
For Soprano and
Alto singers, the Soprano-Alto Chorus has a similar commitment schedule as
the mixed-voice special choir (three rehearsals Sunday after worship
leading to worship participation on the fourth Sunday, once in the fall
and once in the spring).
- Children's
Choir
For young singers
(both girls, and boys with unchanged voices), age 3 and older, this
occasional, short-term Choir provides an opportunity for the younger
members of our community to join together in song. This choir sings
occasionally during the year, and rehearses for three weeks (Wednesdays
5:20 – 5:50 p.m.) in advance of each presentation.
- Senior
Choir
For adult singers
of all voice ranges, the Senior Choir provides a weekly opportunity for
congregants to delve deeper into the musical riches of the Christian
Church, develop their musical skills and provide musical leadership in
weekly worship. The Senior Choir rehearses Thursday evenings, 7:30 – 9:15
p.m., from early September through mid-June, and provides leadership of
congregational singing, and usually a choral anthem, in Sunday worship
from September through June.
- Handbell
Choir
Open to all ages
Grade 3 and up, the handbell choir provides an opportunity for congregants
to collaborate in making music on 3 octaves of Schulmerich handbells,
through developing handbell and general musical technique while preparing
service music and special solo choir pieces for presentation in worship.
The handbell choir rehearses weekly on Wednesdays, from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.,
from September through June, and supports congregational singing and
provides special music in Sunday worship several times during the year.
-
Worship Band
For
instrumentalists in our community, the Worship Band provides an
opportunity to support congregational singing through their instrumental
gifts. Our Worship Band has an acoustic focus, and supports congregational
singing in our Taizé-style worship services, as well as of more
contemporary worship music in our regular Sunday morning worship
(including material drawn from the United Church’s new congregational
music resource More Voices, as well as some Praise & Worship music). The
Worship Band rehearses once (usually on a Thursday evening, 6:00 – 7:15
p.m.) prior to each Sunday morning worship participation.
